What's the Buzz?  BeBloomin!

History of the BeBloomin OCCOA Partnership

What's the Buzz?  BeBloomin!

~ Dona Wishart, OCCOA Executive Director and Gaylord Heralad Times
Prime Times Guest Columnist, January 6, 2015

As we begin a new year, just a reminder to readers that you should look for a column to be informative, to carry an opinion and to sometimes be entertaining.

So, what's the buzz on information?

The Otsego County Commission on Aging (OCCOA) board of directors has approved an agreement to enter a community partnership program with BeBloomin! This will provde a new opportunity for the OCCOA agency to lead the way in our community with another pilot program.

BeBloomin is an unpresedented web-based platform, with interactive screens and face-to-face video assistance, designed to support older adults, people with physical limitations, baby boomers and family caregivers. BeBloomin addresses key aspects of life, including health and healthcare, and spirituality, family and social connectivity, personal and life management, residential safety and monitoring, leisure and education, work and volunteering.

BeBloomin, in partnership with the OCCOA, will be offered in pilot release to individuals, organizations and businesses in our community. According to Joel Ackerman, founder of BeBloomin, "Our mission, through BeBloomin,is to make certain that the best possible quality of life is within everyone's reach. To ensure this through the OCCOA partnership, BeBloomin will be offered for free to pilot participants, family members and friends as we work together to further develop and enhance the service."

So, what;s the buzz on opinion?

You will not want to miss this opportunity! Why? For reasons like this:

  • Flora just turned 101 and although she can't make it to church as often as she would like, she attends Sunday services via BeBloomin and she and Pastor Swanson enjoy weekly video visits.
  • Mavis, 92, gave up her car, which meant giving up her volunteer work at the grade school. Now, from her home, with BeBloomin, she is once again helping kids learn to read.
  • Gladys, living in a senior housing facility, enjoys being able to place video calls, herself, through BeBlooming to her daughter in Sweden and her granddaughter serving in the Peace Corps.
  • With BeBloomin, connecting with one's loved ones, as well as the world one loves, is easy and free to participants in the OCCOA pilot program.
  • BeBloomin embraces a communitywide focus providing services to residents in entire towns, counties and regions. Organizations of all kinds - including churches, senior housing locations, senior centers, home health agencies, schools, performance venues - may participate, creating opportunity for communitywide connections
    through BeBloomin.

So, what's the buzz on entertainmnet?

Through intuitive screens and clear instructions, supported by a Video Support Center - the first of its kind in the world - BeBloomin brings together a wide range of capabilities, including, as examples, multi-way video calls with up to six family and friends; tele-visits with health care and service providers; remote attendance at church services and performanceevents; and e-books and e-audiobooks. All through one, easy-to-use and safe, web-based platform.

What might be more fun than exploring this opportunity with your family and friends, through the BeBloomin and OCCOA partnership, in this place we call home?

Otsego County - once again, leading the way!
